Application Of Rodless Cylinder In Automation Equipment

2-axis robots are precisely positioned in the X and Y axes, and by using the Rodless Cylinder, the Z-axis actuator can be eliminated entirely. This saves a lot of money in the automation equipment.

Rodless cylinders utilize vacuum force from a vacuum pump or vacuum venturi (a compressed air powered vacuum "pump"). When vacuum is applied, the cylinder rod extends until the vacuum cup seals on the load to be lifted. Once the vacuum seal is complete, the cylinder automatically retracts and holds the product. When the vacuum is turned off, such as by a vacuum control valve, the product is released. The cycle is now complete.

The most significant advantage of a vacuum cylinder is that it does not require any other power, such as pneumatic, electric, or mechanical actuators, to extend or retract. It is completely independent of the XY axis operator. The second advantage of a vacuum cylinder is that it includes automatic Z height adjustment. Any position of the product within the cylinder's stroke is a position where the cylinder will stop and retract immediately. These cylinders can also be equipped with sensors to determine the internal piston position. This allows the machine controller to confirm the position of the cylinder at any given point, which is important in automation equipment.
